CBD and anxiety - 42 Degrees

Anxieties are running especially high lately. Are you feeling more nervous than usual? Is your mind racing every second of the day? You’re not the only one. For people who experience anxiety frequently, it can be hard for them to find a treatment to help manage their daily symptoms.  About 30% of adults in the United States (66 million people) experience anxiety.

In efforts to find some natural relief to their worries, CBD has become a popular alternative — or complementary treatment — for many anxiety sufferers.

How People Use CBD To Combat Anxiety

An important first step in understanding how CBD works, is to familiarize yourself with how CBD works and how its potency is affected by the various ingestion methods. This is critical information in order to help you determine which form is best suited for your desired outcome.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD — shorthand for cannabidiol — is a natural chemical compound found in hemp plants that interacts with your endocannabinoid system; a network of receptors and neurotransmitters throughout the body that is linked to your central nervous system. When the chemicals in your body are balanced correctly, it’s happy. But when the chemicals in your body are imbalanced and stressed, like with anxiety, things like muscular tension, headaches, weakened immune system, fatigue, and weight gain can occur.

Many anxiety sufferers are turning to CBD to try and regain balance through a naturally occurring chemical rather than pharmaceutical treatments. CBD is a type of serotonin receptor, similar to those replicated by SSRIs (a common medication group used to treat anxiety and anxiety-related disorders). SSRIs help block the absorption of serotonin in the brain and increase the brain’s ability to carry more signals, boost your mood, and reduce anxiety. The idea is that CBD is able to accomplish this in a similar way, and many people have found relief without turning to medication.

In addition, other studies have found that CBD can lower activity in the amygdala — the “irrational” part of the brain where anxiety stems from — which allows for increased prefrontal cortex activation — the “rational” part of the brain that can quiet the stress coming from the amygdala.

How Can It Be Taken?

There’s no one method that works for everyone, and every body will respond uniquely. The best way to learn which product is best for you? That’ll take a little trial and error. An important thing to remember, however, is that you should start small and increase your dosage over time. You’ll need to allow enough time for the chemical to start to take effect on your system (usually a week or two), and increase incrementally until you find a successful dosage. Starting too high might mean headaches or other mild yet unpleasant side effects if you aren’t used to CBD already.

CBD Oil

The most common form of CBD is in an oil tincture. CBD oil is a mild oil (usually grapeseed or linseed oil) infused with the hemp extract that contains the CBD chemical compound. Tinctures allow you to measure out the precise dosage you desire through a dropper. To take CBD oil, you deliver it under the tongue, wait several seconds, then swallow the oil. This method of delivery is the most fast-acting and direct way to consume, as less of the chemical is lost through digestion or dilution.

CBD Oil Capsules

Capsules come in a soft gel, much like taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Capsules are a great option for elderly consumers or those looking for a simple method because they’re easy to swallow, are pre-measured to contain the same fixed amount of CBD, and can be taken along with your vitamins or other medications. They can also be tossed in your bag and taken on-the-go without worrying about spilling or breaking. The draw back to capsules is that it takes longer to feel the effects since the capsule needs time to dissolve, and some of the potency can be lost to your stomach lining and digestive process.

CBD Gummies

An issue a lot of CBD users have is that the hemp extract often flavors the oil with an earthy or grassy taste. CBD gummies are an increasingly popular option for their array of fun flavors. Like capsules, CBD gummies are pre-measured, but they offer a little more pizzazz and excitement to consume. Like capsules, these take a little longer to go into effect, but they’re still more fun.

CBD Topical Creams

Topical creams and rubs are another popular use for CBD. From cold therapy creams for your muscle aches, to beauty products and bath bombs, topical treatments aren’t going to help your anxiety from a chemical standpoint, but they might help you relax and take a load off when your body is feeling stressed. These products are used the same way you’d use any other lotion, oil, or creams, but have an added soothing effect.

Getting Started

To understand how CBD will interact with your body, it’s essential to start small and build your way up. If it’s your first time or you’re new to CBD, it may be helpful to follow a process of trial and error to determine which CBD product meets your needs. Most first-timers start with a low dosage entry point to CBD, then slowly build from there. Depending on your goals, low dosage may be enough, or you may have to increase by quite a bit before you find what you’re looking for.

Regardless of what your end goals are for using CBD, the most important part when choosing a product is to do your research and ensure you’re purchasing something that’s high quality and certified. The first fight against your anxiety is to trust the product you’re using. From there, you can fine-tune the right dosage or method that works for you.
